- Distance. Slipped nibs, hairline cracks and early delamination are hard to resolve at two storeys — harder still at four.
- Concealed details. Valleys, parapet gutters and the back faces of chimneys — where roofs actually leak — face away from every safe vantage point.
- Flat roofs. A flat roof often cannot be seen at all without access equipment.
None of this criticises the standard survey; it is the stated scope. The question is how much unknown that scope leaves over your head.

Drone roof surveys: what aerial imagery shows
A drone roof survey captures high-resolution 4K imagery from directly above the roof. It sees every slope, looks straight down into valleys and parapet gutters, and records all four faces of a chimney. Individual tiles appear in detail binoculars cannot approach. Instead of “the roof appears weathered”, you get photographs of specific failed tiles to hand to a roofer.
Drones are the right tool where ground inspection fails: fragile coverings that must not be walked on, tall buildings, thatch, towers, and parapet roofs. There is no scaffold cost. The whole roof is recorded in one visit.
They have honest limits too. Flying depends on weather, and some locations sit inside airspace restrictions under the CAA Drone Code. A drone cannot lift a tile or probe a timber. When do you need a roof survey?

Unexplained leaks and damp
Ceiling stains that come and go, damp around a chimney breast, or a musty loft after rain all point upwards. Aerial imagery finds the cause far faster than trial-and-error repairs.
