METAL FRAMED HOUSES

The Arcal house is a post-war, system-built property constructed between 1964 and 1970 using a steel frame with timber panels and asbestos cement cladding. While not classed as defective, these houses rely heavily on concealed structural elements, making condition and maintenance history critical when assessing risk.

A rare post-war non-traditional house built in 1950, the Aluminium House uses a metal frame and storey-height metal wall panels developed by A W Hawksley Ltd in collaboration with the Bristol Aeroplane Company. Its extreme rarity and reliance on metal construction make corrosion risk and long-term durability key considerations when assessing condition.

The Aluminium Bungalow BL8 is a post-war non-traditional dwelling manufactured between 1948 and 1950 in response to acute housing shortages. Constructed using aluminium cladding and framing, these single-storey properties are identifiable by their shallow pitch gable roofs, generous eaves, and profiled aluminium wall panels. While widely distributed across the UK, their long-term performance is closely linked to condition, particularly in relation to corrosion at low level and the limitations of original insulation and detailing.

The AIROH Temporary Bungalow is a post-war aluminium prefab manufactured between 1945 and 1948 to address severe housing shortages. Although intended as a short-term solution, surviving examples remain in use today, with long-term condition closely linked to corrosion control and ongoing maintenance of their aluminium structure.

The AGB Modular 6 house is a rare steel-framed modular property dating from 1965, with only around 50 units constructed. Its lightweight wall systems and reliance on corrosion protection make condition, maintenance history, and professional inspection particularly important when assessing these homes today.
